I was born in Anchorage, Alaska and spent my early childhood at a fish site on Kodiak Island. My family moved down the west coast to Washington, then Oregon, and, finally, California. I completed my undergrad at UC Davis and graduated in 2010 with a bachelor’s in human development. I have one younger brother who spent his summer last year supporting my first PCT thru-ride and is now working in Kodiak. I am very appreciative of the love and support I have always received from my family (even when I do crazy things like back to back thru-rides)!
Valentino is an 8 year old Morgan gelding. He is 14.1 hands tall and is all black with a white star. He is absolutely gorgeous and FULL of personality! Valentino was born in Sacramento, California and I got him when he was 3 years old. He is the most sure-footed and trail smart horse I’ve ever ridden, which is why I trust him to carry me safely from Mexico to Canada on a sometimes sketchy mountain trail. There are times when he questions me but I want a partner who asks and not one who follows blindly. We have come to many obstacles that I am unsure about so I ask him what he thinks about it. I know he doesn’t speak English but he knows what I want to know and he either maneuvers over or around the obstacle or backs up to tell me no, he doesn’t think it’s safe. I always try to understand his concerns to make sure there isn’t anything I’m missing before I ask him to go forward. I think we make a great team! : )
